Video Of Making Signet Ring Using Sand

My amatuer video , 3 hours edited down to 40 minutes

One might ask why I prefer to cast my own signet rings rather than using die stampings

Question : Doese it take less or more time to cast a ring and finish by hand than using a die stamping

Answer : Yes , it takes about 2 hours longer making signet rings using this delft clay ( sand ) casting technique

Question : What are the advantages of casting rings this way , instead of using die stampings

Answer : Die stampings cost between £100 & £200.00 each more than I pay for recycled gold to make 1 ring & they are restrictive because (A) I get what is available from bullion company (B) they are designed for specific finger sizes , therefore extra large and very small finger sizes are far easier and better when made in clay.

Question : Are there advantages to using die stampings

Answer : Undeniably die stampings are better when you want an average finger size & the seal engraving is going to be engraved by a hand engraver , otherwise as my castings are so much cheaper to buy if price is important to you, for the miniscule benefit I do not feel the extra expense is worth while.

Mass Produced Signet Rings
53 minutes edited down to 48 minutes

First 16 minutes is the time taken to finish the casting before re sizing

The remainder of the video is me re sizing the ring down by 6 finger sizes afterwards

Please note thinner mass produced rings will size down more easily but then the head can not be made flat

and therefore are not suitable for crest or seal type engraving.

No Gold Signet Rings Were Injurred In The Making Of These Video's

The signet ring castings in the mass produced video are not gold , I seldom sell any mass produced gold rings made this way , and to be honest 5o of my heavyweight rings with a total weight in the region of 550 grams would cost me in excess of £9,900.00 + VAT appx £12,000.00 + the center sprue appx another £5,000.00

........................................................

I would not want that sort of stock lying around in my workshop , Just Castings ltd,  very kindly cast all of that in bronze for me at a total cost of £100.00 in order to make this video ! usually they would cut the rings off for me and re-use the center sprue ( which I will be returning to them )

........................................................

I have about 100 of these bronze rings in stock at any time as I send them out as head size samples , I also use them for test engraving new designs & as samples of engravings to send to new trade clients.

........................................................

Bronze is about 90% copper and as such is easier to bend to shape than 9ct gold so it is ideal for video's , I would have had to hit the 9ct gold a lot harder with my leather mallett  , silver is considerably easier !

.........................................................

The MAJORITY of my silver signet rings however are made using lost wax casting , because they are so thick and heavy and cast in batches of usually 30 or 40 rings at one time the quality is exceptional when sized before any finishing is carried out. However if you prefer a sand cast version of any of my rings they start at £145.00
